Lets keep this discussion strictly on the topic of why you do or don't believe in God.

I guess for me since I was born into a very religious family it was bred into me to believe in God. However like I mentioned in my other thread I don't believe in religion.

Also another reason I believe in God is that its hard to imagine that Earth and the rest of the universe came into existence accidentally. It seems to me that those things had an intelliegent designer behind them. But thats just my opinion, I don't try to force anyone else to accept it.

Not really a belief here, because I'm more of a person who needs to see to believe. If he's almight and powerful, why not show him/herself every now and then? He supposedly loves everyone, but apparently not enough because of the ignorant rules and rights in religion.

Use to, but not anymore. Too many bad things happen to good people. If God were real then those things wouldn't happen...

I honestly want to see what the trend is for ATOT

Are the majority of ATOT atheists or is it just a few loud mouths who troll every religious thread?

The suspense is killing me :p

it seems more reasonable to me that the universe came about for a reason than blind pure chance, that is one basic reason i believe in God

I believe simply because when you take a second to stop and smell the roses, and try to notice the infinite ammount of detail, and beauty in life, it simply defys any ability that I possess to say that it's anything but devinely inspired creation.

Well, it's easy... just search "religion" or "God". I know the Search has been acting funny lately but you'll still get a good idea out of the handful of lengthy threads covering the subject.

Depends on your definition of God.

No, if God in the traditional Christian/Muslim/Buddhism.
Yes, if God is the force of nature that made up of the universe.

I do not, but I'll go down as an agnostic because it's a more tenable position.

Why not? Because there is nothing in my life that has ever hinted to me that some hand was guiding the universe, the Earth or my life. Secondly, I could minimally believe in a higher power...but not one that takes the form that Semitic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) believe in. Sorry, no omnipotent being is going to act like Santa Claus writ large - to think so is just idiotic, IMO. I believe in living my life to the fullest degree that I (shaped by my society's beliefs) see fit, not by ridiculous arbitrary writings from ages past.

If you do an 'advanced search' and put "God, religion" (without quotes) into the "any of these words" box, select Off-topic, and select Topics only, I'm sure you'll find at least a day's worth of interested reading.

I believe something or someone had to have had created the "universe". Not to mention, I don't see having nothing after death pleasing. I also don't like how someone people have horrible lives and try hard to make them better but always end up getting where they started. Then they die and it's over. They lived for no purpose at all.

I hope God exsists, but not from a Christian perspective.

It's a sensistive issue and usually results in a flamewar because people on both sides can't respect a person's belief that they simply do or do not believe in a God/Gods.

I believe in God for my own personal reasons.

I know there are tons of religious threads but its always a mystery to me why there are so many people who have such a strong aversion to any topic about God or religion. I mean I can understand if its not your thing, but why are some people so adamant on neffing in those threads.

Can you imagine if people had the same reaction to car and girl related threads? I guess then we could call them luddites or gay.

To be honest, it's probably because many of us athiests/agnostics find deists to be either hypocrites or weak (eg. needing the crutch of a higher power to whom you can attribute why your life just sucks), or both. It does affects one's life - I would never settle into a long-term relationship with a religious person.

To top it all off, it's easy to be a loudmouth on the Internet. That explains it all.
