Do you believe cell phones should not be used or used in a car?

Not used....too many times I see someone talking and not watching the road/traffic which almost causes an accident.

Studies have shown that it doesn't matter whether or not you use a hands free kit, your driving is still impaired. Though, like other things, I'm sure with practice it doesn't matter too much.

Me, I'll use my phone on the highway or something where you can kind of cruise on autopilot but not in a situation that demands a lot of my attention.

New driver + new cell phone + new relationship= me finding a new lane in a micro second.

I just wish the users had their priorities in order.........:sun:

Old folks are just as bad but not as common in this misuse of cells......

Banning cell phones would just be an easy "feel-good" fix on a far more serious problem, which is that some people don't pay proper attention while they are driving whether they have a cell phone or not. That said, I find that a goodly percentage of the inattentive drivers I see on the road are also on their cell phones... but by no means all of them.

I strongly disagree with the argument that a hands-free cell phone is just as dangerous as cradling one in your ear. I have a hands-free, and I find that it's no different that simply having a conversation with a passenger while driving. Regardless, I have great respect for the dangers of driving and the necessity of paying attention, and avoid talking on my cell phone while driving when possible.

But I am strongly opposed to banning cell phones while driving. Believe it or not, the cell phone is the best invention for automobile safety ever except for the seat belt. There once was a day when a break-down in the middle of BFE meant a high likelihood of being attacked by a passing felon, and stories of accident victims pinned in their cars down an embankment just off the road who died of starvation because no one could find them.

Its fine to carry it on you, just don't use it when you are driving.

yeah, even sans cell phones alot of people suck at driving. i would however be for banning their use while driving. not baning them from the car, just while driving. if its so important you have to call an emergency number, pull over so you dont get distracted and cause another emergency.

i almost always turn off my cell phone when im in the car, and if its not off i wont answer it, but call back once i get to where im going. i can drive just fine, but i know i dont drive as well with a cell phone in my ear.

There's "use" and there's "abuse". A world of difference. The soccer mom in her giant SUV gabbing to her friends while weaving at 45mph in the fast lane is "abusing". The contractor or the sales rep who relies on their cell phone for their very livelihood is "using".

It's not an argument. It's been corraborated by research. And while I don't see why it would be different than just talking to someone else in the car, it appears to be different.

"When you're talking on a hands-free cell phone while driving, your eyes may be focused on what's ahead, but your mind's often elsewhere.
University of Utah researchers report this "inattention blindness" slows a driver's response time and attention, increasing the risk of accidents.
The conclusion may come as a surprise to those who view hands-free cell phones as a safe alternative to hand-held models. "

However, other research shows that it's not the use of the phone that matters so much as the nature of the conversation.

And it could just be that there are alot of people out there that can't chew bubblegum and walk at the same time. ;)

If they can't talk and drive with both hands on the wheel then yeah, I pretty much think they can't chew bubblegum and walk at the same time either. Those same people should also be banned from listening to the radio and driving or BETTER YET, banned from driving period.

Mobile phones are like ANY OTHER DISTRACTION, and should be used with care and discretion while driving. To make laws singling out mobile phones is to give in to knee jerk reactionism. We single out cell phones because we can SEE the other person is using one. You cannot see if a person was scratching their crotch, changing the radio station or talking to the passenger when they pissed you off, but if they are talking on a cell phone, you can SEE them doing it. So you pick that out as the reason.
