Do you balance your checkbook?

A friend of mine was telling me today that he never balances his check book. He just looks online at the balance and takes it for what it is. I said that's bad.

What do you think?

I compare my monthly statements with all the receipts I've accrued for that month (sometimes I get behind, so I usually do a couple months at a time).

almost never; we usually use billpay online and our checkcard; so we dont write more than 5 or 6 checks in a months time.

Not really anymore. I never get close enough to $0 for it to matter, and I make few enough transactions that I'd notice if something was out of the ordinary.

I rarely write checks. When I do, I go online and transfer the exact amount I need to cover the check from my savings. Same when I pay bills online.

I dont even just mean checks. He never even double checks that the charges he makes on a credit card are valid and for the right amount.

Never ever balanced my checkbook and I'm an accountant.

I review my online statement about twice a month and write few checks. Most everyhting but Rent is put on the CC so I have an itemized listing of all my expenses each month.

I used to when I was single. My wife used to check it when we first got married, now she's more interested in spending it. We have way more than we'd ever spend in the account so we're not concerned with running out of funds.

why do you need to when there is online banking? I can see all my transactions and balance any hour of the day. I know what i have so if something fishy is going on the balance will reflect that

If someone charges you the wrong amount, say a waitress, or if someone steals the CC# and makes smaller charges, you would definitely notice?

I wouldnt rely on that.

I don't. I just look at my balance online as well as my monthly statements for anything that looks strange. I don't hover near $0 anyway and most checks I write are written to companies to cover bills so it's not like I have a bunch of outstanding checks anyway.

We use our checkbook to keep track of ALL transactions, online, check, ATM, debit, all of it. My wife is religious about it.

Do you really spend that uncontrollably?

If I had a bunch of little charges or a waitress overcharges I would definitely know. That's why you get receipts.
