So I was adjusting the radio volume in my gfs car the other day when she told me to only put it on 15 or 20 or other increments of 5. This got me thinking about how humans favor certain numbers over others. I noticed that I my self avoid certain numbers as well when I adjust my tv or radio.

I find avoid a lot of odd numbers, but not all of them. I like 13, 15, 25 but avoid 17, 19, 21, 23. Its an interesting phenomenon I think. I also avoid some evens as well but less of them than the odds.

Do you avoid certain numbers when adjusting sound volume? Or do you only base it purely on sound?

I set my car stereo to 42. Why 42? It's as loud as it can go without the clipping being too bad if my mp3 player is set to max volume. I adjust the volume with my mp3 player.

Normally I don't, but if I'm running one audio device signal through another audio device, such as an ipod through a car stereo, I always set the first device to whatever 80% volume works out to be. I read somewhere that this is a good rule of thumb to avoid distortion and it just became a habit over time.

Oh, I also set my clock radio to 50. I tend to like round numbers, so I chose 50 over 49 or 51, but it doesn't matter that much. About 50 sounds good, so I set it to 50.

I have a little bit of OCD, below the clinical threshold. I try to go for even numbers and almost always do, but once in a while I really want a very precise volume level that happens to be an odd and am able to overcome my touch of OCD to enjoy the music at the level I want instead of soothing the OCD need for even number volume.

Oddly this is the only thing besides brightness and contrast levels on monitors I am like this with...

On my old car stereo, the volume adjusted in very fine increments, and I would usually try to leave it on 35 or 40, sometimes even numbers, and actually sometimes I would make it so the sum of the two digits was either 5 or 10 (32, 37, 41).

My current car's radio doesn't go so high. Generally it's between 7 and 13 depending on how fast I'm driving and what I'm listening to. So I just based it on sound since I don't have the luxury of setting it to a specific number.

Oh another thing in my car. When the fan is on and the air conditioning is on, there is a light above the AC button to indicate that the AC is running. When the fan turns off, the AC also turns off and the light also turns off. But in my mind, it's still secretly on. So I will turn the fan on, switch off the AC, and then turn the fan back off.

I avoid cracks or if I step on one I have to step on another with my other foot. Used to do that one a lot more.

One thing I still do is if I'm eating something like nuts, M&Ms, whatever, I have to chew a certain amount on one side and then the same amount on the other side. I'll either chew 4 on one side and then another 4 on the other, or I'll divide them evenly in my mouth and chew on both sides.

I'm not totally obsessive over this stuff but I do sometimes notice it. Unlike people with actual OCD, I'm able to ignore it fairly easily.

My reciever in the home theater, I usually set it at between 50-70, 50 is good for when I want it to be audible, but not too loud. 70 is good for when I want it to be LOUD. I avoid 1-49.5 since the dialogue can be difficult to hear. I avoid 70.5-100 since it is much more likely to cause permanant hearing loss.

My reciever in the living room, which is hooked up to the little TV, I usually set between -55db and -45db. Anything quieter than -55db tends to be too quiet. Louder than -45db can be too loud for conversations to take place.

My car, I just set it at whatever sounds good, usually between 12 and 27, any louder and the speakers rattle and sound like shit. They are crappy speakers.
