Well, I live in the US...so that pretty much mandates having one available if you're unwilling to accept being a crime victim. If you're willing to hand over your valuables, time, freedom, safety, etc then you don't need to carry one.

Wow, I guess there's actual "stuff" in Canada; I thought it was just a big forest, with a bad case of freezer burn, let alone "dangerous things" you need to defend against.

Downtown Cleveland, after dark, waiting for the bus. Downtown Cleveland walking to my parents first house... and besides all that, a pocketknife is a damn useful tool.

While working, hundreds of times...when I worked security/military/law enforcement (not necessarily in defense, but for searches, covering, etc). Privately I've had to draw, but never fire (fortunately). I also have it out for searches of course, just for safety (ie searching the garage at night when I hear a sound), although at home I'm more likely to choose my shotgun (and lately my CAR15, just because it's new).
