Do you always shut your PC down properly?

What are the consequences of simply turning off the power to the PC when you are finished using it rather than doing a proper shutdown? Will it eventually self-destruct? :)

If you turn your computer off while it's writing data to the hard drive, it can mess up the filesystem. With today's journaling filesystems (NTFS, Ext3, Reiser, etc) it's not as much of a problem as it used to be, but the risk still exists.

For the record, I never 'shut down' my laptop or PVR, but I do shut down the workstation and server.

Lol, I'm wondering how you would go about shutting down a comp improperly these days. If you hit power in windows the comp automatically goes through the shutdown procedure. I suppose if you hit the reset button and then power, or used the switch on the psu... but why would you do that?

99 percent of the time, no problem., expically if the pc is idle. Have you got a PC with ATX powersupply and run XP, then the power button will do a shutdown (software) then turn off.

I've been nailed by complete lockups and by the power going out (either for real or just one of those momentary blips) and was wondering the same thing. Everything seems ok, my drive is NTFS, should I check it somehow?

Flip the switch on the surge protector. This is actually fairly common, and sad.
