My current system is ancient Athlon 2400+ Radeon 9800pro ect ect
its an emachines (so it looks horrid and the mobo is just cheeze) that was given to me by my (ever so well meaning) parents a few years back... well the radeon 9800pro died and with oblivion right around the corner and Unreal 3.0 engine games soon to follow...time for a new system.

The girlfriend was not happy about this concept, as I didn't want to spend $$$ on something that I would not be totally satisfied with, so I compromised by selling the ps2 and xbox.

I have built computers before, but nothing within the last 5 years x.x so im not hip to whats going on exactly so if something conflicts or there is a problem you foresee please speak up.

Cpu: 3800+ X-2 $300 which includes shipping from monarchcomputer.com (I live in california, newegg wanted tax for this x.x)

Mobo: eVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard (which comes with the 7800gt for 350$ on newegg thnx whoever pointed that out on this forum)

Graphics card: Evga 7800gt comes stock with a 470mhz core and 1100mhz memory

Ram: 4 sticks of this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231029
(its cheap but is it horrible? idk much about ram these days..even if its bad...am i really gonna notice..? back in the day ram was just ram x.x)

Case: Logisys CS888CL (its an acrylic case, and i know alot of people dont like them cuz they get dirty and they dont keep cool very well, but i just like the way they look, sorry lol) its about 80$ shipped (and i pay tax on it too..freakin california x.x)

PSU: Logysis Acrylic 550w 62$ shipped xpcgear.com

Others: everything else I have already and im not too concerned with for the time being as my pockets are empty.

And how could I buy a new system and keep using this POS moniter from emachines.....?
so im getting this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustRatingReview.asp?Item=N82E16824116373
ViewSonic VA1912wb Black 19" 8ms Widescreen LCD $340

alot for a monitor but by God, whats the point in having all this gaming horsepower if your monitor doesnt go past 1024X768...and widescreen....i like the idea of that.

Im hoping that, after I get it all assembled and start digging into the new generation of games, my tan will fade away to the comfotable pale of a true computer geek, and further ...more arguments from a jealous attention starved girlfriend.

What do you all think?

What's your budget? What I've noticed.

Ram: get 2X1 GB! There's G.Skill 2X1GB DDR400 ram for $145 AR, but not high in overclocking (which I don't know if you'll do that).

PSU: Crap. Enermax Liberty 500w or Antec NeoHE 500w FTW. As most of forum members know, if its above a 6800 ultra, it deserves a 485-550w PSU (depending on price).

Monitor: Meh, widescreen = EXPENSIVE-O, I'd rather get a 19' for $210 AR :)

4 sticks of ram in an A64 machine sets the command rate to 2T wich supposedly decreases overal performance. So I'd get 2x1gb.

Just keep your 2 GB sticks, if they are pc3200 at least...

PSU: Crap, 550w means nothing in this case, get a quality brand dude.

+12v has 25 amps, and more than likely it will not actually even give its rated 550w. The Forton is better by far, but I'd rather have a 500w Antec or Enermax. Antec Neopowers also seem to go down in price.

No. you would not be able to run the memory in dual channel this way. 3 sticks would lead to a bigger performance hit than running 4. Unless you can find someone to buy the two sticks you have now, you might as well run 4 sticks and save the cash.

hmm maybe i should stick with the 1gb i have now, and when i get extra cash i can toss in 2 1gb sticks instead of the planned 4x512. i can give the 512's to a friend or something at that point.

Good call. Most games you'll play now will still be fine with 1gb, so upgrading to 2gb later is fine IMO. I'd suggest (for a video card), possibly waiting until the 7900gt is released. Most prices will go down, so the 7800gt would be a better buy, but also the 7900gt is reported as being (roughly) at the 7800gt price point.

I would run 2X1GB G.Skill PC3200 rather than 4X512MB G.Skill PC3200. The ONLY reason to do so being that you would still have memory slots free so you could upgrade in the future.

Just some FYI to the uninformed in this thread. On Athlon 64s, memory configuration does not affect performance in any real way.

A memory setup that is PC3200, single channel, runs at timings 3 5 5 15 or worse, and runs at 2T, is only at worst 5% slower than Dual Channel PC3200 running at 2 2 2 5 timings at 1T command rate.

There have been multiple threads stating this. The big 200+ post thread that closes the book on memory has not been found unfortunately.
