on the subject of mississippi's educational budject cuts that elimanted public schools art, music, band, and PE programs this year for all grades below 9th.

What you are seeing in the Arts programs being discontinued is a part of a well planned and long term effort on the part of conservative republicans to do away with public education. They have been working toward this end for several years. Their tactic is to starve the schools for funding and then turn around and criticize the schools for doing such a poor job. Did you ever wonder who the people are, and where the money came from to defeat all the school bond issues in recent years. Can you remember the last time a school bond issue passed?? I'm afraid they (the republicans) have the votes now to make whatever cuts they want to make. If you will look a little further forward you will see that their ultimate aim is to do away with public education so that money that is now paid in school taxes can be used instead to fund private religious schools. But, take heart--we still have plenty of money to fully fund the prison system and to pay private companies to house those prisoners we don't have room for in our public prisons and jails. I have always believed that there is something fundamentally wrong with a society that would pay any amount of money to lock people up, but almost nothing to educate it's children.

LOL. I live in WA state, arguably one of the most left wing states in th US. My kids get p.e. once a week, music once a week and no sports. People around here consider thier school one of the best ( teachers even let thier kids attend there, usually teachers kids go to private school, around here).

We havent had a Republican governor in 20 years.

S&P just did an assessment of the NY school systems. The average price per student per year was $11,000. The schools with the best grades and test scores spend $20,000 per year per student.

What's funny is they (not S&P) asked some conservative folks about school funding and they said "throwing money at schools doesn't work". They then said... "So it's ok to take money away from your school district because they don't need it?" Then the conservative starts stuttering and back stepping.

The conclusion was that the typical conservative trusts him/herself to spend money wisely, but doesn't trust anyone else to.

This was a piece by Brian Leher on the radio BTW.

My kids go to an inner-city Catholic school with about 40 - 50% minority students. The cost is about $3,700/yr and about half the kids get some financial aid. Test scores rival those in public schools in the affluent suburbs and are many times better than inner-city public schools.

I live in upstate NY by the way.

In the city of Washington DC in 2001-2002 the K-12 expenditure per student was $13,993.00 which was the highest in the country. As for the metro area the average in Virginia in the same period was $6,343.00 per student and in Maryland $7,658.00 per student. The irony is these figures come from an NEA website that claims that spending is lagging in public education.

Yeah... a big part of the study was about how the money is used is just as important as how much is used. I agree.

The study was over the entire state. I'm sure the city spending really boosts the averages. Interesting that a Catholic school spends so little money on teachers, I wonder why someone would want to work there? Maybe just having the little children around is considered a job "benefit" for Catholic teachers.

Who would want to work in many public schools where you put your personal safety at risk everyday?

I suppose you think that pedophilia is linited to Cathlolic priests. Whatever religion, non-religion, cult, or Satanic organization you belong to has pedophiles too.

That is hard to believe. Are you sure this number of $3700 per student isn't subsidized by something ?

It's actually cheaper if you go to a parish school that has a church associated with it as the church kicks in some money.

I'm not sure how much of the schools operations are funded by tuition versus other sources. I'll try to find out.

I do know that there are alumnae that give give generously.

It's nice to hear some unadulterated good news for once. Riprorin, I am extremely happy for you and your children. :)
