i do although i'm conflicted about why.

i'm not a pacifist. i do think there are legitimate reasons to resort to an armed response. society cannot function with forgiveness that is as blind as the
violence it is addressing. but i'm still amazed at any person's ability to forgive a criminal who has so wantonly injured their being, family, or community.

you ?

I live very close to an Amish community. I'm not surprised a bit by the response. It is the way they are, and always will be.

It is pretty tough for the average person to understand their way of life and beliefs.

I hope it teaches others in the world about the meaning of forgiveness.

Admire it, yes.

But if i was in that situation i don't think i could forgive that person(well, not so soon anyway) & i certainly wouldn't attend his funeral.

I was thinking this last night. I really do admire them in how they handle this.

I do admire their attitudes, and their beliefs, like others have said, it could teach us something. I wouldn't of attended the funeral. But holding on to a grudge, something you can't change doesn't do anyone, anygood, you are no better than the shooter himself. The amish move on, so shall we. We should never forget, but, lessons need to be learned here.

There are legitimate reasons for violence or revenge, but this is not one of them. The killer is dead, and that's all there is to it. Nothing is gained by hating him. The Amish are doing the right thing here.

"To err is human, to forgive is divine"

They exemplified that statement.

I personally wouldn't be able to forgive so easily if I was personally affected, but I do admire those who can.

I admire their convictions - and their amazing execution of their convictions. They manage to live without imense convenience - all because they believe it leads to a path of sin.

But, I don't think they're necessarily right - but there's really nothing wrong with their beliefs most times.

I think they're attempting to 'swim against the current' though with the way they act against human nature. If one innocent guy is getting attacked by two other guys and three others are nearby.. I think it's the duty of the three to stop the attack. The Amish would do what in that situation?

i just wonder one thing; you know how ppl always say how the person that died was such a good person? do they also say this in these cases? cause it quite obviously isn't true. i admire the amish for being able to forgive that easily. i can't say i would.

My uncle died this year, his entire life revolved around alcohol. Never in my life did I see him sober. Nobody said anything good at his memorial service... nobody said anything at all at his memorial service except the minister who said some stuff about death.

It's the power of faith. The same kind that allow on to blow himself up for God.

When one believe he is doing God's will, anything is possible.

I don't know... but I do know that 75% of the stuff said at funerals in general is complete bullsh!t.

With that said, I too admire the Amish. Although I disagree with their beliefs, they are one of the few religious groups in the world that simply live their lives without interfering in any way with those around them. I think we could all learn something from that.

And to think the "God Hates Fags" Baptists were going to protest their little girls funerals. Now those are some assholes that deserve to be hated.

It takes true courage not to hate another, when that person has given you every reason to hate them. We are quick to label others heroes. The Amish are true heroes in my heart.

I, myself, lack their integrity, but I stand in genuine awe of the personal honor, genuine generostiy, and TRUE CHRISTIAN SPIRIT of the Amish. They walk the talk, even through the Valley of Death.

These are people who don't spend one extra second trying to tell you or I how to live our lives, unlike the ugly, red-faced, hate-filled Whackomentalists now trying to bypass our Bill of Rights and force their Taliban-like agenda on the rest of us.

The Amish live in the quiet light of true forgiveness. Nothing is stronger. Nothing.

From my far more profane level of existence, down here in the madding world, that big, buzzing blur of Fundie Republicans and meat, may I pause this morning to salute the Amish.

See my sig? I'm still trying to get there.

But the Amish?

I admire them with every fiber of my body and my heart and my soul.
