Someone maybe be able to correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I don't think movies actually spin at 1x, it's actually something slower than that. DVD 1x is equivalent to a 8-9x, which would be around 1.2MB/s. At that speed it would take under an hour to read a whole disc which is how long that Pioneer DVD-R mentioned in another thread here takes to write a full 4.7GB. Considering the average movie is 2 hours, that would mean a DVD drive playing a movie is spinning closer to 1/2x.
