Do you actually notice the difference in DVD speeds?

While playing a DVD movie? such as between 8x and 16x, using a radeon 32mb DDR as your "decoder".

Someone maybe be able to correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I don't think movies actually spin at 1x, it's actually something slower than that. DVD 1x is equivalent to a 8-9x, which would be around 1.2MB/s. At that speed it would take under an hour to read a whole disc which is how long that Pioneer DVD-R mentioned in another thread here takes to write a full 4.7GB. Considering the average movie is 2 hours, that would mean a DVD drive playing a movie is spinning closer to 1/2x.
 
There are programs available that will analyze the bitrate of the MPEG-2 video stream on a DVD. For example, my Devil's Advocate DVD came in at an average of 5.44MBIT/sec... and it uses a 448kbit/sec AC3 track. (5.44 + 0.448) / 8 = ~750KB/sec. Although there are times when the video bitrate spikes to 10 almost (because MPEG2 is VBR) but for the most part it is safe to say the movie averaged around that amount.

Different movies have different average bitrates.

IMHO, the only purpose of a 16x DVD-ROM is to expedite the ripping of the DVD to your hard drive.
