A friend of my mother's once called for PC help - "I turn it on, but nothing happens"

I prefaced with "Okay, I'm going to ask you something, and don't be offended .. it's the first question tech support has to ask everybody.."

Of course I've never done tech support, but I get to read about it on ATOT :)

".. is your monitor turned on?"

much amusement ensued.

I'm not sure how that relates to the OP though, but I am trying to avoid cleaning my apartment.

I answer a lot of questions for a lot of people every day. A lot of the time I have to really simplify things. It's a challenge for me to slow down enough and make sure I'm clear.
Somewhere along the way I found out that I can learn something from everyone, and that I may not just be the most brilliant person on the planet. I try to be careful to remember that a lot.

all you really have to teach them...is how to do research and properly phrase questions.

if they don't want to take the time to do themselves.....well....

OTOH, there is a guy at work who smells like ass, and is always coming up to me with questions I could resolve for myself but have no answer off the top of my head. Every time he asks for a piece of software, I tell him "just go to tucows and search", but he keeps coming back.

The other day, in addition to not wiping his ass after his noon sh!t, he has a cold ... he approaches me and is in danger of getting too close and says "I tried downloading MSN messenger but when I installed it, it said 'could not locate library' or something like that". I just hurriedly say "I have no idea!" so he will skulk back away from me as quickly as possible.
