Do women take their jobs more seriously?

I hate to stereotype, but I've noticed that women seem to be much more competitive at the many places I work. They also seem to care much more about their job than at least I ever have.

For example, the male bosses I've had all seem to have more of a sense of humor and seem to view that their current job is just a job, while the women bosses I've had have been routinely serious and of the job 1st, life 2nd variety.

My wife is also having problems with uber competitive co-workers and, to me, i wouldn't care to even compete, while she's worked up about it.

Also, women in the workplace seem to take on the job events (say a vendor screwing up an order) VERY seriously - like they get visibly agitated and have a bad day because of it, while the guys seem to shrug it off..

I've had several female bosses and none of them were level headed.

Really? Ive seen the exact opposite at my work. The women here do NOTHING. They just kiss the ass of the boss (who is female as well). The boss thinks they are doing so much work when in fact its all the men doing it. They try and play the politics game and it works because we have a female as a boss. It sickens me.

ugh i need a new job.

I'm not saying one style is better than the other, or one is more level headed that the other. It just seems like women seem to .. internalize.. work more. Talk about work all the time, take work home with them. Get stressed out more visibly, etc..

While me? My work ends at 5:00 PM, I don't take it at home unless they pay me enough to care

Yeah, I don't care one bit - I like my job and like job security, but I wouldn't yell at another coworker for messing up, or get emotional about anything at all regarding my job, becuase it's just a way for me to pay for more xbox games (and, ok, my mortgage).

The huffy, puffy, loud/stompy walking/ bad-mouthing co-workers behind their backs sort of management just does not make sense to me at all.

fyi my boss is female and is quite awesome. her awesomeness seems directly related to her giving off the "yes this is a job but I have ambitions that extend beyond this place" mentality..

It's personality rather than gender. I've had laid back female bosses, and uptight male ones. And vice versa.

I myself couldn't give a shit about work. It's just something that pays the bills.

In general they are more insecure because on average they are suckier and have something to prove/have a chip on their shoulder. And the whoremones don't help either.

idk - my g/f has a hard time letting work go. If somebody else fucks something up, she'll be up until like 10pm fixing it. I'd just let it wait until the next day.

But, women have it tougher in the workplace. People don't take them seriously the same way they do with men.

I think this might be close to the truth. It does sometimes seem like the women in my office get more stressed out/agitated when something is not going right, or something bad happens. It doesn't mean they are working more or less than the men; also, it's hard to know if this is actually the case or if it's just my biases at work.

I will say this, in my short professional career (4 years) I've gained tremendous respect for women in the workplace - I report to one and there are a lot of women in critical positions here. Their attention to detail is very impressive.

I think I stress more but I don't know if that's because I'm female or because I'm me.

Women are more emotional.

Women have to compete harder to stay on par with men.

My boss who is male has a mood meter, on good days he's friendly and really caring. On bad days, he'll berate, yell and scream at you until you cry. A set of emoticons were used on the whiteboard to describe his mood swings ranging from happy face to clouds with lightning. Past female bosses I've worked for had been very caring and cheerful.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that women doing the same job as men get paid only 75% as much. If that's the case, it seems like they would have to be more competitive.

Depends on the job. Some jobs are silly to take too seriously. Some require seriousness.
