Do Windows x64 Updates really break iTunes?

I tried installing iTunes 6.0.5 yesterday and it told me that "Windows x64 was no longer being supported." I looked up on it, and I read that the reason is because a Windows Update breaks any version of iTunes that you have installed. If this is true, I guess I'm moving back to 32-bit Windows. I'm sick of the lack of support for Windows x64 even when it's superior to 32-bit Windows.
