I think it's dumb, but I base that upon only watching 10 minutes of it in my life. As always, it will be mentioned that if somebody started WET there would be plenty of people (starting with jesse jackson) up in arms against it.

They coulda chosen a more appropriate name for the channel but there's nothing wrong with showing WhateverTF you like on it.

I would agree with that too....

But if it is gonna be that way for some, it should be that way for all.

BET doesn't bother me. Are you upset with Spike TV (TV for Men) or Lifetime TV (TV for Women)?

Actually, Lifetime ticks me off. It's the equivalent of one of those ridiculous women's magazines that fill their minds with impossible ideals...much like soap operas.

Yes it is racist. I remember flipping through channels and landing on BET and caught one of their commercials. It was a movie audience made up of all black people except for one white guy. Everyone was laughing at the movie except the white guy who had a perplexed look on his face. One black person looked to the other and said with some disdain, "Some people just don't get it." , then fade in BET symbol.

If you had a white channel that ran the same commercial all *heck* would break loose. Spike Lee is a racist, Farakan is a racist, Al Sharpton is a racist and they are, I believe, revered on BET. I don't think in america we need tv stations named after the color of our skin. I would not have a problem with African Heritage Channel or whatever if it did not put down other races as I wouldn't have a problem with a Scottish Heritage Channel if they didn't look down on blacks for not wearing kilts.

I am not African American, however I feel that BET portrays the wrong image of the black man. I have many black friends, and they are offended by all the "Bling Bling" and the way they have blacks perform on stage and often make a fool out of themselves or other black persons. I feel that it is good to have pride in your culture, and to many this is an outlet from their everyday lives, however, naming yourself the "Black Entertainment Televsion" network as opposed to say the "Hip-Hop Network" brings a responsibilty to represent ALL black men and women in all facets of life.

Lifetime needs to show one of their 3 hour movies... with a man being the rape victim for once. ;)

Hmmm let me get this straight your *jealous* friends have a hard time with another black man on stage, in the spot light, cashing checks in the multiple grand range, and getting laid anytime they want by almost anyone they want?

How would the Hip-Hop Network cover all the bases the programming does?

There are the players and the wannabes...just because someone is black doesn't make them a player and I do see a lot of black men and women thinking they are the next Jay-Z or Ashanti (etc) and doing a laughable job at it.

Same with whites, chinese, japanese, indians, muslims, catholics, jewish, ...

Why don't you and your black friends develop their own network if they and you are so offended?

I have no problems with BET. I don't think it's racist.

Now, what bugs my husband is when he sees a K-Mart ad that's got "WHITE SALE" on the cover. He's like "WTF? None of those sheets or towels are white! They're all taupe or mauve or crap like that. That just doesn't sound right!" hehe

yup

I met the man who created it (and then sold it)

I don't have a problem with it, I don't watch it.
I agree that if someone were to make a channel for the white audience, there would be riots - LA would burn again.

I have no problem with it.. so long as other races reserve the right to have their own WET, YET, RET, etc..

But I'd rather see a day when we wouldn't worry so much about the color of our skin.

Nah..I don't have much of a problem. If they can have spanish channel, indian channel, and asian channels, I don't understand why they can't have a BET. Though I am not sure I'd want my kid watching some of those music videos until they are past adolescent I don't have much problem with there being a BET. Hey..since all the other hundred channels are white channels; what is the big deal if there is ONE black channel. Some of the comedians are awesome.

Yes, because everyone is jealous of something in your eyes. It never could be a lack of respect could it?

Why do people argue about nonissues such as race? Race doesn't exist!
We're all human, but people obviously don't understand this is they argue about these kind of petty things.

Seriously...are we any different from children in a schoolyard picking on the vulnerable?

I don't have a problem with BET... I don't watch it because I don't like that kind of music (give me Skynyrd any day). I don't think it would bother blacks if we had a white equivalent - for one, they could make fun of us for starting a network called "WET." I think a lot of people go way overboard with this reverse-racism b.s. Yeah, we white folks are SO oppressed. The fact is that there is no need for WET, most of the rest of the channels appeal to whites.

Regardless of the level of need, WET would be outspokenly white, which would draw hate/racism accusations.... JUST BECAUSE IT TAILORS TO A SPECIFIC RACE --but MORE SO BECAUSE OF WHAT RACE IT IS.

We are no longer a nation segregated by law, but by choice......

Hopefully genetics will allow us to alter the human appearance to the point that all people will have blue skin and marge simpson hair. Of course there would be that whole annoying "gotta actually get to know someone on a personal level before you make any kind of judgement" thing, but that's a small price to pay. ;) It's sad that people think a difference in melatonin levels is a justified reason for a TV network or anything else, including making assumptions about anyone.

edited for the spelling police......
