Do webcams leave temp files of the video?

Lets say you start a webcam session through MSN Messenger. How can I record that webcam so I can save it, or is there a temp file it writes to that I can get the file from?

You'll need a program that records the image in a certain area of the screen, and then just highlight the cam section. CamStudio is one, but it ain't free.
