Do we trust Nvidia to make Half-Life 2 run and look good?

I am thinking of uprading to the EVga 5900SE from my Visiontek 4400TI. My only concern is support for DX9 PS2.0 FP. I am debating between the 5900 SE and a used 9700 Pro. The 5900 looks to be the killer deal. I am just worried about the quality support of DX9 functions in the NVidia FX series in the future. Any rumors out there on NVidia's new drivers with Half-Life 2 and other PS 2.0 Full Precision support? I know the old benchmarks have the 45.x drivers.

Dig-life have some benchmarks with new detonators and seem to perform poorly. Anyway they use a HL2 beta version, but if you don't want surprise then you'd better go with the 9700Pro which is sure will perform ok.

The only thing I "trust" corporations to do is try to part me from my hard earned bank, consequently, I have no intention of giving my money to any of them prematurely.

I'd either wait. Nvidia says this was fixed, but I haven't seen any valve confirmations. Who do you trust now? This is why 5900s arent that great as they seem. Unless you can prove to me that it is fixed.

Even with new drivers the 9700 will be at least somewhat faster. But I'd just wait till the game is actually out.

I think someone asked me how I thought UT2003 would perform on their Stealth3D (Virge) card

That's where I am coming from.

Wait until the game has been released and then look at reviews featuring HL2 before deciding which to buy. If you must purchase a video card now then I'd go with the 9700 Pro which has stronger dx9 performance than the fx5900 in general.

Wait till the game is out, you win either way then. (if that's why you're upgrading)

If I had to put my money on an nVidia product it would be an NV40 based card. Nothing currently available from ATI or nVidia will run future games at a rate that will meet my expectations.
