Been wondering this since i saw this thread over at the Storage Review forums.
http://forums.storagereview.ne...ex.php?showtopic=26965

What interested me was, i too have noticed i cant copy multiple files / folders any more without my hard drives slowing to a crawl.
And i do recall this was not the case a few yrs ago.
Although i have no scientific data to back up my statement since its just a personal observation and not like i ever gathered data anticipating this to happen.

Now i'm certainly not an expert at this stuff, but would really like some of those who understand this more than i do to comment / give some opinions of whats being said in that thread.

I think you need to be in AHCI mode to get NCQ working... which also means having driver updates before the OS install process.
Don't quote me on that though...

They do show some impressive speed gains there.

Yeah, you do have to be in AHCI mode for NCQ.
Thats exactly why ive been setting the bios to AHCI and adding drivers to my windows installs for awhile now.

And i assume the reasoning in that thread is exacly why when you ever ask about setting up a pc with AHCI mode, the usual answer is "there is no benefit or very little, so dont bother if you already have windows installed."
I'm sure we've all seen that kind of answer at one time or another, which should have been the 1st clue that NCQ hasnt been properly implimented for some time.

true. its like RAID5 on motherboards, no motherboard EVER has had proper RAID5 implemented, oh it worked, sorta, but drives fall out, the array gets lost, etc... its just a checkmark on the list feature, which is why some companies have resisted adding it for a long time.
