Anti-U.S. Sentiment Deepens in S. Korea
In a recent opinion poll conducted by Korea Gallup for the Chosun Ilbo, one of South Korea's three major newspapers, more than 53 percent of South Koreans surveyed said they disliked the United States, up from 15 percent in 1994. Over the same period, the percentage of those who said they liked the United States fell from nearly 64 percent to 37 percent.
They sure as hell don't seem to want us there.

Trust me, they wanted us there when we saved their country. What's with all this ANTI-US stuff lately. I mean, hey, we're not bad people are we?

"If the United States left, I wouldn't mind," says Kim Young Ran, 29. "If North Korea wants nuclear weapons, I think they should have them. The U.S. and so many other countries have them. There's no way North Korea will attack us with their nuclear weapons. I don't think so. We're the same country. You don't bomb and kill your family. We share the same blood."
Can you believe that sh!t?

I don't understand all this South Korean anti-US sentiment either. Do our soldiers behave badly over there or something? I'm starting to think it's better that we just leave and let them defend themselves if they are attacked by North Korea -- I don't like defending people who hate us.

What an idiot. They'd simply roll over the DMZ under the cover of their nukes.

I think Koreans are just pissed off because those army men, who ran over those young girls in Korea, are getting off easy.

And of course I'm sure there is the usual mix of propaganda, ignorance, racism, confusion, and politics.

What's wrong with expressing dissenting opinion in a democratic society?

Remember, Subic Bay? The Phillipines decided not to let US military to renew their lease there. That's what they decided. So be it.

i believe it.....why? cuz those two countries think that way.....both countries still have a ton of family across borders......i knw it seems like total bullshi!t....it was just a shame that bush had to sour relations btwn US and north korea....both counties have a ton of pride for the whole peninsula...and they don't hate each other....but hate each other's ideologies...south korea saw a ton of images of koreans...north koreans but koreans notheless...starving......that's why s. korea fears not of north..but pity and brotherhoodship..

crazy isn't it...

main reason why s. korea hates US........just when north and south relations were getting very very warm again....families torn accross borders able to meet again..even a train line reopened that links the two counties.......bush soured things up big time...in my opinion, bush loves to start shi!t....moral in the navy is very low...my cousin is in the navy and he told no one wants to get deployed....saying it's bullsh!t....my friend is in the army, deployed to korea....he says army life isn't like the way they romatisize it in TV and movies...and he's korean...and he says the people there in korea is giving him a tough time....cuz koreans see him as a korean in an american uniform.....

all in all...i really have no opinion about this really...except one thing..

bush keeps saying he doesn't want to go to war w/ iraq....pssshh....he's sooo anxious to pull the trigger....

It is time, over fifty years later, for the US to move out of Korea. Let the South deal with maniacs in the North.

If they still have a ton of family across borders, why aren't they asking instead why they can't go visit each other. When they figure that out for themselves, they'll know why the US is there.

I hope we would. What's the point of being there? Regional security, I guess, but if the south koreans don't want our help, let them deal with the North with their own bodies.

he says army life isn't like the way they romatisize it in TV and movies...

Oh, really? I didn't know that. I thought being a soldier was all fun and games. It never occured to me that there would be anything about Army life that someone could dislike. What a shame. Another spoiled little brat. If this is the kind of people who make up our military, I think I'll go puke. Tell your friend he doesn't deserve to wear the uniform of a U.S. soldier.

well i gues ur gonna have to puke more....my cousin says most navy personel really don't like the navy....he said one guy went ballistic and road raged this one dude who had a "go navy" bumper sticker....one dude got drunk and purposely broke his leg so he's skip the 6 month tour.......from this outlook, our military looks like it has a bunch of lazy people who have no commitment to their own country eh?...then let's all join the armed forces...the ones who are enthusiastic...cuz my friend was....turns out he was wrong...

while i'm not crazy about korea (i'm korean), i think you've got a good point there. i also believe that if you held the same poll in any country where the u.s. military is present, you'll find the same results, anti-u.s. sentiment.

Your friend doesn't seem to understand. The main thing that people in the military do is gripe about the military. It's tradition, it's expected and if they ever stop griping then that's the time to get worried. We had a saying on our ship, a bitchy sailor is a happy sailor. You bitch about the food, the long time away from home, your supervisor, it's too hot , it's too cold, you got the midwatch twice in a roll etc. The ones that bitch the most and the loudest are usually the ones that sign up for another tour. Now it's been over 20 years since I got out but I doubt it has changed that much.

As for the Koreans, I saw a poll the other day, the young Koreans that were born after the Korean war are not very friendly to the idea of having US troops there. The older Koreans that remember that Americans fought and died so they could live free and enjoy their lifestyle, they want the troops to stay.
It's too bad the young ones don't know their history very well.

All that proves is that some men(?) don't have the hair on their cojones to take it when it starts to get rough. The vast majority of our military are not like your friends. Thank God you didn't join to contaminate our military, too.

Very racist. Most outside cultures are like that.

If they don't want us there, let's pull out the Eighth US Army and see what happens.

I would agree except that we need cheap computer components for upgrades. ;)

My Wife is Korean and in South Korea right now. According to her, what S. Koreans are most unhappy about is the soildiers can do anything with no circumstances...run over two 14 year old girls walking beside the road with a tank...jsut because the driver chose to ignore a warning from a tank ahead of it......What are the repurcussions for this?...nothing..except the tank driver get a trip back to the states.

S. Korea wants to be able to put US soildiers in a S. Korean court.

To be honest I understand their being pissed..... a US Tank runs over two 14 years old girls because the tank driver disregarded a warning from a tank ahead of it..and nothing.............I ran into a Chevy Cavalier once..I got tickets and fine and higher incurance rates for 4 years...no jail time but there were repurcussions.

So should a person be punished more for running over two 14 year old girls or for denting a Chevy Cavalier?

If you don't know exactly what is happening in Korea peninsula and S. Koreans' anti-America sentiment, read this article.
It may help understanding current issue in both S. and N. Korea.

The younger generation in SK don't know or don't realize how Americans helped SK.
All they see or read about is some of the idiot American soldiers who has no regard
for Korean cultures and customs, or commit crimes while stationed in SK.

However, the older generation still remember all the things American soldiers did for
Sk and they do want American presence in SK, in fact, there was a pretty decent turnout
for Pro-USA demonstration last week.

this is a good point.
there are several posts here that keep on using the language of "we" and "us" "saving them" or "giving them freedom" as if this is still 1950...which simplifies and cheapens the whole understanding of current US-Korea relations.
