Do Vaio laptops use standard hard drives?

I know some OEM's years ago used to put proprietary gear in their systems, so that you had to buy their expensive upgrades.

Does anybody still do that?

I just managed to get a free Sony Vaio, VGN-N21E/W, with a missing hard drive. It powers up fine, just needs the drive, but I didn't want to buy one without making sure first.

I have an older Vaio laptop--a PCG-GRX570, and it uses standard drives (PATA on this old one). I've upgraded the drive with no problem.

Yes. SATA on newer, PATA on older. WHat may vary is the drive caddy.

I don't know about the Vaio (I haven't torn apart my mom's... YET!) but my Dell 6000 lappy, with a standard PATA drive... not only has a proprietary drive tray (or caddy as Corky says...) but also an interface adapter plug.

The RAID SSD's are custom to the really expensive Sony's. Otherwise you should be fine.

Though it is possible they used a 7mm height drive instead of a 9.5mm
