Do USB DVD drives exist?

I've seen other USB drives, but can't find a DVD model.

A USB DVD drive would be very useful for a variety of reasons, the main being it's plug and play usability on any fast PC.

Anyone found one?

Thanks for your time, Deano.

I would think the USB bandwidth limitations would severely throttle a DVD drives throughput when reading DVD's. An 8x DVD drive has a througput of 10.8MB/sec maximum, and USB can only do 1.5MB/sec (both large B's as in megabytes), and that would be using 100% of USB's total bandwidth. So the useability of the DVD drive is pretty much lost for the DVD function.

You're right about the bandwidth limitation - the most they've managed to get out of usb 1.1 is a 32x8x4 cdrw. Firewall products are an option but they are pricey.

USB 2.0 is starting to appear which will eliminate this bottleneck so it looks like I'll wait until my next motherboard upgrade before getting an external dvd rom.

Thanks for the responses, Deano.
