hey all,

as i teenager i used to sit for hours playing games no probs. took a loooonng break from comps and now im back into it (27 now) but i found that after sitting 3-4 hours a night after work on weekdays i have some serious neck pains and my wrists feel very sensitive, like they'll break if i put too much pressure on em. it's come to the point where i can't even sit for more than 30 minutes cause my wrists and neck hurt. To make matters worse, i have a cracking sound (like when you crack your knuckles) when i stretch my neck in the morning (NEVER had that b4). I've been going to the gym to weight train 2-3x a week for years, so i cant imagine how anyone can stay on a comp w/ no neck/ body probs if they're not physically active? I also dont go near da comp on weekends, only on weekdays, so how do these comp geeks manage to spend hours on it without any pains? I make sure my wrists are 90degree angle when typing, sit upstraight, monitor is eye level, have a gel wrist pad for my mouse, what else can i do? what do u guys do to avoid this and why is it happening now to me? thanks in advance for any feedback and cheers.

-comp geek in need

my wrists hurt really bad every now and then, like if i barely put any pressure on them, it hurts pretty bad.
its liek that for a day or 2 then it goes away. happens about once a month or so.

i've noticed that posture has a lot to do with it. Also, having quality keyboard, mice, mousepads, etc can help a ton too. I wish they made a wide split keyboard too, it seems a lost of wrist pain comes from my hands being too close together when typing.

learn to type? you cant make out "comp" from "computer"? "u" from "you"? "39k" from 39000? "jk" from "joking"? where did u see me writing anything remotely resembling "l3@rn 2 tipe"? please, stop hijacking the thread and just piss off.

i had wrist problems. had to wear that carpal tunnel wrist band (from walmart, good one is about $15, has a metal spoon and splinters for excellent support) for about 3-4 weeks and now the pain is gone. also, don't rest your wrist on the table while handling the mouse - which is what causes the problems. u should be moving the mouse from your elbow/shoulder. hope it gets better for you!!!

Put razors on your keyboard. You won't be worried about the wrist pains anymore.

I used to get wrist pain until I switched to using a trackball. Completely eliminated it.

if you're getting wrist pains, you may have carpal tunnel. try out any of the ergonomic keyboards that are available. if you're getting neck pains, have you tried sitting with a different chair? your head should be looking straight at the screen. otherwise, you are putting strain on your neck.

I recently had neck surgery and my surgeon told me that one of the biggest mistakes people make is positioning their monitor too low, which strains the neck. He said that ideally, you want the viewing angle to be a little above level so that you're head is tilted slightly backwards. This helps reduce most of the strain you get in the back of your neck and deltoids. After hearing that, I put my monitor up some a couple 4"x4"'s and it has definitely helped my neck. I initially tried to just lower my chair but that created too much strain on my arms/wrists.

FoBoT answered your question correctly, based on what you asked. You asked, specifically, and I translate, "Do you get neck or wrist pains from sitting on (your) computer?". Thus, FoBoT was correct in answering that you should sit in a chair.

...and it was the first thing I also thought of when I saw your thread.

My wrists aren't at a 90 degree angle... they're straight, resting on a wrist rest. That might help you out. Similarly, my mouse is positioned on a mouse pad with a wrist rest. I once had wrist problems, but no longer.

For neck problems, make sure your monitor is at eye level, where you're neither looking down nor up... which you seem to already have under control.

For elbow or shoulder problems, your desk and/or your chair may be too high or low.

Thats ATOT for you, but seriously, work on your punctuation. Even trying to read your post gives me a headache.

I stopped lifting for about 6 months time and during that time any extended computer use killed my wrists.

Once I started introducing curls (hammer, dumbell, barbell, ect) back into my exercise routine I almost completely eliminated the pain without really changing any habits or environmental factors.
