With todays newer monitors/lcds, do u ever turn them off after use or just let it go to 'amber' mode. Turning stuff ON and OFF supposedly hurts the electrical items more than letting them be at standby. Good practice?...how about the amount of electricity 'wasted' by not turning the monitor/lcd off...or is it negligible.

Yes, whenever I power down the whole rig for several hours.
I turn off the monitor, the UPS and the power switch. The cable can remain plugged :)

Edit.: I usually leave the computer on for night, but I always turn off the CRT. Efficent power saving.

I always turn off my CRT if I'm gonna be away from my computer for more than 10 minutes. CRT monitors use more power than the computer itself IIRC, so it does help conserve power.

I turn off my crt (21" dell) every night before going to sleep. When I'm at school I turn it off if i'm taking a nap because its really bright even when its on screensaver

I just let my home LCD go into standby. I turn off my CRT monitors when I leave work though, at my boss's request.

i just got a 17 lcd and i think when its goes amber the power draw is so small its negligible.

I turn off my LCD, even after I power off my PC.. becuz there's this annoying, albeit faint, high-pitched noise that's present when it's on stand-by....

I have measured the power requirements of my 22" Viewsonic P220f CRT using Kill A Watt

in use - 103w
standby - 2w

In comparison, my 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u uses

in use - 78w
standby - 2w

I have yet to measure the power requirements of a LCD screen yet.

So IMO, you should definitely not leave your monitor on when your computer is idle. But, it's a toss up whether you turn off your monitor or let it enter standby.

my 21" nokia monitor from dell has been flickering this past week. i've been turning it on and off daily for the past 3 years that i had it. the flickering only happens when i first power it up. its gotten a bit worse these past couple of days, the entire screen would go blank for a split second and come back usually for a few times before it stops doing that.

This survey may be affected by my own personal observation that no fledgling (defined as a human youth not yet progressed to the stage of renting their own place and paying their own d*mn power bill) is even aware that ANY electric devices have an off switch.

I just turn mine off whenever I won't be around the computer for 10-15 minutes.
