when u r burning cds, dvds, do u leave it alone or do u do other things like surfing the net, play games , etc..i was tolded by a friend that its not a very good idea to open up multiple apps while burning cd, cuz it could corrupt it.

i always leave my comp alone while burning stuff. wha about u?

I never have a problem. I continue to surf online or watch a movie. If it's really important that everything is burned properly onto a disc, I just verify at the end. It's one of the main reasons I moved to dual-core. I was having problems doing basic tasks while burning a CD/DVD.

Some guys here at work though will flat out just leave their computer if they are burning something. A little paranoid, but I guess the data their burning is pretty important, so I can't doubt their judgement. It takes them 15 minutes to figure out how to burn a CD so I'm not about to encourage them to keep working while it burns.

I don't give it a second thought now.
I do whatever , while burning a dvd.

I remember when cd burners first came out and how I wouldn't dare breathe on a pc while burning.
But thats years ago and no longer the case.

When I am burning a disc, I keep wokring while it is in the background, but I still am cautious about burning at much more than half speed.

Theres a buffer and if it runs out it will tell you. I do multiple things while burning, but i do keep an eye on the buffer. Dual core helps too.

I usually restrict to web surfing and make sure to have my browser opened before I start burning. I find theres less chance of a coaster that way. But with HDDs being so cheap now, I have not burned anything in a long time, I just keep stuff like setup files duplicated accross my server and backup server.

when I burn movie to dvd while I surf websites the movie playback look good and sometimes it playbacks poorly so it is hard to tell if I let it alone.

With audio it might be a concern since all of the things like burnfree can cause little gaps in the data while waiting for the buffer to refill so you might hear some pops, but for data it doesn't matter at all.

come to think of it, I've never had a coaster while burning data, that I can recall. Only video/audio where its usually sensible. I remember back when burners first came out, had to make sure the screen saver was off or it would screw up the burn. But we were also running 500Mhz machines then, thinking it was super fast lol.

if it's a single layer dvd then no problem, but for dual layer, make sure the burner is getting enough bandwidth and cpu time.

Yeah, with slower computers and older burners, I didn't do a thing and, as already said, I even had to be sure to turn of the screensaver. On my current laptop and desktop though, I do whatever and they are both single core systems about 2 or 3 years old.

I have four computers so I just use an available one for burning.

I realize it's OK to do other things on the computer but I just don't do it.
