Do two 6870 1gb make 2gb?

6870 are generally 1gb, but if you cross fire them does it make the performance of a 2gb card?

No. It can only use 1024MB of VRAM. However, it will be far faster than a single Radeon 6870 2GB except perhaps in certain cases where 1 GB card cannot run due to an insanely hight setting that demands more memory. Crossfire vastly increases performance, but the VRAM only counts once.

Simple answer: NO.

Total VRAM = 2GB

Effective VRAM = 1GB

As long as you are not exceeding the effective VRAM limit.. you should seesubstantial increase in the performance.

hmmm, Do you think it would be worth it to spend the extra $100 for a crossfire 2gb 6870, or are the chances of needing 1gb more of VRAM to slim?

I don't think a single 6870 needs more than 1 gig of RAM. Not quite enough GPU power to warrant it. I think dual 6870's could easily benefit from 2x 2gig of RAM though. So, I guess if you are buying 2, or you're pretty sure you're going to get a 2nd one down the road, get the 2gig'er. If not, just get the 1gig card.
