They're herded into the slaughter house... and as somebody who has worked in a slaughter house, i can guarantee you that the cows are afraid once they smell the blood. There were quite a few times when the cows were herded into the killing cage (more like 3 concrete walls with one wall a metal door, that slides open to drop the cow to the floor once it's been killed) got so scared they tried to jump over the cage... the cow would only get their front legs over, and then workers would need to smash the cow in the face with 2 by 4s or whatever to get them back into the cage.
