Do Transition lenses for glasses really work?

My dad had a pair of transitions back in the late 80's and they were a piece of crap. It had to be pitch black for them to get back to completely clear.

I wear glasses and it would be a perfect solution for me....but are todays lenses better??

Anyone wear them?

I had them a few years ago.. they change pretty quickly now. I never had to wait long for them to go from dark to clear

I have them...they're great. They react to UV rays, so you have to be in direct contact with sunlight for them to turn. When you're out of contact, they change pretty fast back to clear.

However, car windows filter a lot of the UV...so it can be really bright in your car, but your lenses would probably still stay mostly clear. :)

Walk outside into a bright day and your glasses automatically darken. Walk back inside, they get clearer.

So they are pretty useless while driving then? They are not meant to be sunglass replacement?

i have 2 pairs, very convenient indeed however they're not sunglasses replacements. i doubt they give as much UV protection as sunglasses do

They should just make car windows out of the transition lense glass.

No replacement for sunglass's. They do darken your view and make things have a better contrast but no replacement for sunglass's though.

I had some a few years ago. It wasn't worth it... they are not sunglasses replacements. I ended up with contacts and sunglasses and was much happier

I have transistion lenses.. i call them a heaven send.

Yes they are no subsititute for sun glasses but when it does get dark its not dark enough but its dark enough for me. But its still better than not wearing something dark on those bright days.

I like them, they work really well.. and the time taken to darken isnt that bad. It darkens behind my visor in my helmet and in the car too (a little bit). It takes a while sometimes to go to clear but otherwise it works good.

I like it, worth teh cost.

I have a pair and they work very well. I think the added convenience of not having to carry sunglasses makes them very worth while.

The trick is, you actually have to go outside for them to change. Other than them not working in the car since the windows pretty much shield the UV rays from you, they works excellent. There are different shades you can get them in and they change very quick. Going back to normal isn't instant but its relatively quick...

I process a lot of this Transitions grinding and edging of these ophthalmic lenses. We are now doing the third generation of this stuff. Keep buying more of this stuff so I can buy more PC parts...

i like my pair of transition glasses. they transition to and from quickly enough. the only bad part is the not working inside a car. i have a sun roof though, and just open mine when i need them to transition.
