Do those robotic devices (vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers etc) really work? Or it is marketing BS?

The wife wants one of those robotic vacuums that just go around all day suckin up crap. Do they really work? Or are they just cheap peices of crap? Should I get one? Anyone have experience with them?
Thanks

Sounds neat, but if they actually worked REALLY well, I think more people would have them.

I've got a ramba (sp?) and it works more or less.. it does tend to cover the whole floor, but its really slow and noisy. doesn't make any sense unless you have absolutely no time to vacuum.

From what I've read, the Roomba works well enough but like stated above is only really justified if you have absolutely no time to vaccuum.

I also got a promo video from a company that makes robotic lawnmowers (robomow?). Dunno how well those work.

Yeah, a robotic lawnmower would kick @SS!! God that would make my life much easier, but I have a feeling they really work for sh!t.

My uncle has one of the floor cleaning vacuums. It works fairly well. He ususally just turns it on before he goes to work, and it will vacuum, and then when it is done, shut itself off.

Until one day it short circuits and burns his place down!!!

they are portable vacuums. they are just programmed with data about certain areas, common "motion" techniques, and proximity sensors. some have sensors (optical) that detect dirt as the robot passes over it. all the technology has been around for decades, and the actual product around for around a decade. one of the flaws is the battery.

I think they are only really efficient if you have a large, open area for them to clean/cut. Especially so for the lawnmowers... if you have a lot of uneven areas, trees, shrubs, stones, poles, anything besides a flat, open area... it would probably miss a lot. They would probably be good for something like a football field.

My cousin has a Roomba. It more or less works as it should. But don't expect it to vacuum up anything besides dust bunnies and crumbs.
