Do those gadgets that tell you how far you walk really work?

At my work I am almost constantly walking around and doing stuff. I am curious how many miles I walk in one day so I am thinking about getting one of those gadgets you wear to tell you how far you've walked.
Has anyone ever tried one and are they accurate?

I used to have one that I wore during soccer conditioning. It got annoying after a while, but I thought it was accurate.

I worked night shift at a large target, and I wondered the same thing. So much walking... too bad it wouldnt add up me climbing the ladders.

Pedometer is what your looking for.

Cheaper ones will not work unless your constantly moving at almost the same pace - you measure how many steps/min you take - how far each it, enter it then it just keeps track of it for you by keeping track of time.

I dont know if there are ones that can acutally measure if your moving and how far you've moved, i'm skeptical though.
