Do those CD Skip Doctor things work?

I just bought Shawshank Redemption on DVD and parts skipped all too hell. So I cleaned it up for a while and popped it back in and it helped a bit but still skipped in some places. So do these Skip Doctor type devices work or are they all hype?

CD Doctor rocks! I had just bought my PS2 when a game got scratched BAD. Wouldn't play, so I coughed up 30 clams for the deal and now the game works fine....
