Do those build it your self descrambling plans work??

Please don't post any links or anything if its against the rules, I just want to know it those notch type (build it yourself from radio shack type deals) filters actually work to get the prem stuff like hbo. I'm paying for basic, I just wanted to do a fun little project for my last week before college starts and my area switches to digital (about a month or so)

They used to work on a widespread basis when cable companies used simple technology back in the '80s.

Some still work now though.

Not detectable whatsoever unless some cable goon comes inside your house.

I knew some idiot that paid $50 for instructions on how to do one of those... he got it mailorder (can't remember where he got the ad... wouldn't surprise me if the idiot got it from the back of a comic book). Anyways, he contacted me to see if it was legit or if i could help him, of course i didn't believe him and we took it to my old shop teacher in highschool. Needless to say, he didn't think it would work either (i took it to him because i knew he would have helped us built them if they were functional... he was that sort of person).

I'm not saying it's not possible... i'm saying if you get it mailorder most likely it won't, since each region is coded different. YEARS ago, i use to know some guy that did them, so i know they are possible. You're better off trying to find somebody local to do it for you or just buy one (they run about $300 Canadian... so that would probably be $200USD if the prices are similar).
