do those air purifiers work?

anyone ever use one of those air purifier things known as "ionic breeze" machines from sharper image or any similar products? im thinking of purchasing one of those things for my bedroom because i have real bad allergies that are hard to control. those things are advertised to filter out and produce pure air with stuff like negative ions.
anyway, since they run for around $300-$400 and how long they've been selling, i figured that its unlikely they are scams.

anyone have any personal experiences with them?

Yeah they work... but there's a chlorine smell that is emitted from them. I have a Kenmore air-ionizer myself... works differently than the Sharper Image Quadros, but there's no smell from them. Only thing is, it's a pain to clean. With the Quadro, all you need to do is wipe it clean... with mine you have to use a special solvent. If i had to get another one, i would probably get the Sharper Image one... even though i can't stand the smell of it, i'm sure i would get use to it eventually.

They work GREAT. I use to get asthma attacks on a daily basis, and allergies all summer. Now thanks to my purifiers, i get an asthma attack maybe once a week, if even that... and when i do, it's not as serious.

They work excellently, although they are expensive. I have one for my car that I got for free, and my folks have one for their house that runs all the time. There is a slight Ozone smell, but nothing unpleasant. The unit is also adjustable, and is pretty quiet. I'm not sure what negative health effects the O3 causes though, there seems to be some debate as to that. Hopefully not too much since I work with high volume laser printers all day in addition to this. :Q

Definitely go with the Sharper Image one... it's VERY nice quality. Like i said, i had it for a month... i couldn't stand the smell myself, but now that i don't have it... i wished i had given myself more time to adapt to it. I had the big Quadro, and my room is relatively small, so the smell was a bit stronger than it would normally be.

It doesn't smell like ozone... at least not the ozone i'm use to in the copying room. It smells like chlorine... i know one of the selling points years ago when it first came out was the smell actually! But since then i think they're a bit more realistic and that it doesn't smell like the side of a pool, but a bottle of the chlorine in the shed... so you don't see them advertising the smell or odor removing elimination anymore.

That's one of the reasons why i got rid of it actually... the fact that the smell was so strong that i was worried it couldn't be healthy for you. But since then, i don't know. I read up on it a couple of years ago, and the majority was that it was perfectly safe. I'll probably pick up another one in the near future... only because i hate cleaning my current purifier. I literally need to wash it and set it aside for a day to dry... which is a lot more trouble than just wiping it down like what you do with the Sharper Image.

Get it in black if you can... the beige ones get a dirty look after awhile... even if you clean it regularly, you'll see the 'grill marks' getting all gunky, especially if you have a smoker in the house.

You might pay through the nose on filters then. The reason why i got my Kenmore ionizer was because it was filterless... all i have to do is clean it every few weeks.

BTW, mine is medically certified... i actually got a $200 reimbursement from the socialized health care system of Canada for getting it.

I will admit that two things I like about the Sharper Image GIMMICK Ionic Breeze is it's whisper silent and requires no air filters.

Why do you say gimmick? I had one for a month, and it did absolutely amazing. And it's more than whisper silent... it's COMPLETELY silent. I wouldn't know if it was on or off by just the smell... only by the slight breeze.

I wouldn't call it a gimmick unless you know something i don't. It's been around for about 10 years, if not longer. And it's Sharper Image best selling product ever.
