I saw somwhere that a dude on ebay had effectively stolen $500 worth of goods from various people. But it never said what happened to this thief person. Would he get away with it? Is it actually a crime?

my friend lost about 500$ to an ebay troll. he paypaled him the money for a turbo for his car, seller claims he sent, buyer never recieved. pretty gay, and my friend isn't able to do anything about it. :(

In my experience, eBay has lots of seller protection and little buyer protection.

I've been burned for ~$300 worth of merchandise by one eBayer and ~200 by another. There wasn't a damn thing eBay would do about it.

FWIW, I've filed cases with the IFCC in both instances. I seriously doubt anything will ever come of them though.

The ones who get away with it aren't usually the ones who simply take the money and don't deliver anything. Those are too easy to catch.

The ones who get away with long-term scams are the ones who sell fake collectibles. Most of the buyers don't know enough to tell if something is original or a reproduction, so they receive their item and happily leave positive feedback.

A collectibles seller just got arrested the other day for selling fakes, primarily because the seller had obtained reproductions clearly marked "COPY", then obliterated the COPY marking and sold them as genuine. It was ridiculously blatant, and some knowledgable collectors spotted the auctions and called the police in the seller's city. None of the previous buyers apparently were smart enough to realize what was going on.

Yup, this is common practice in the luxury goods department of ebay...you wouldn't believe how many fake high ticket items I have seen being peddled off as real and people buy it up, they think they are getting a great deal but in reality they are getting nothing....if it is too good to be true then it generally is.
