i've only seen the type 1 and 2 with either dongles or a header that sticks out of the port but i want something that will not stick out of the notebook so i can leave the card in all the time

i don't mind something that will take up both slots as long as i can use a regular 1394 cable, no dongle

You want a Xircom REALport style PCMCIA type 3 FireWire card?

The problem is that the regular FireWire port is a little too big for a type 3 card.

oh i didn't think that the regular firewire head is too big for the 2 slots

i'll look up the xircom model and see if i like it

thanks

Err...sorry...I was using the Xircom card as an example. They don't actually make Firewire cards.

It depends if you are talking about a 4 pin or 6 pin firewire port? I think there is a PCMCIA card that has a 4 pin connector (I thought I saw one somewhere once). I don't think there is one with a 6 pin connector (I'm not even sure a laptop PCMCIA port could provide adequate power). Remember, as long as the device has its own power supply you can use a 4 pin to 6 pin cable.
