My pc is pretty old, but i dont want to buy a new one just yet. I do need a new hard drive though, and since they are not making as many PATA's as SATA drives i thought that i could buy a sata drive to future proof it when i do upgrade. anyway, i just wanted to know if anyone makes a SATA to IDE adapter so i can plug in a SATA hard drive into an IDE port.

Just get a serial ATA pci card. If it's hardware based it will run even better than if you run it through integrated board components. Typically this will up the cost. Though the end solution is just buying a SATA card.

Yes (integrated controllers are generally just there to fulfill a check mark on the features list - not optimised) - Yes (you could actually disable one or both of the integrated controller channels if you wanted to to free up an IRQ or two).

Actualy you'd be better off w/ a converter as most modern systems have their IDE channels off the PCI bus and if you are runing more than one HDD PCI can bottle neck your system, if you just runing 1 you should be fine w/ a PCI SATA card though.

So if i ran a SATA drive off a pci adapter and disabled my IDE, it would run just as well or even better? (big smile) :D cool. I might just buy it.

You will want to leave at least one IDE channel running for your optical drive.
