I've seen big and tall clothing stores, but do they make midget clothes?

Or do midgets just wear children's clothes?

Oh the thoughts of a bored man...

I think they have special clothes, but I can't say for sure... tailor made perhaps?

My grandmother was an achondroplastic dwarf (most dwarfs do not like the term 'midget'...it is considered offensive to most) and she usually made her own clothes or tailored store-bought clothes to fit herself.

Most dwarfs are not sized and shaped like children. Their bodies have different proportions than children, so they usually need to have whatever they buy tailored to fit them.

Does that mean you carry the "dwarf" gene? If you had kids, could they become dwarfs?

What about a poor midget? They may not be able to afford taylor made clothes.

They would have to buy children's clothes.

I wonder if they have midget fashion shows?

LMAO. In high school me and a buddy of mine would often reset some of the computer's browser settings (we found out the password for one year) for the "home page" to some midget porn site. And we'd always joke about "gay midget porn." LMAO Good times those were.

Is your girlfriend a midget?

No, but she works for a high-end clothing resale shop and is really into stuff like that.

(Clothing.. not midgets)

They are called Little People... not midgets.
most of the time, depending on the type of dwarfism, they either have to have adult clothes hemmed or buy in the childrens section.

I'm adopted, so there is no genetic link to my grandma, however 3 out of 4 people with achondroplasia are the result of a new mutation (as was my grandma) so it's possible for anyone to have a child with this condition. Achondroplasia is not a recessive gene, so if you aren't a dwarf, you don't carry this gene. My grandma had three children, two of normal stature (my mom and one of her brothers) and one dwarf. The dwarf son had one child who was also a dwarf.

Edited for clarity.

You are very ignorant about achondroplasia. The only way to "carry the dwarf gene" is to actually be a dwarf.

Achondroplasia is a heterozygous dominant condition. Two defective genes results in still-birth. Not all dwarves are born from dwarves. It is a common mutation. Curiously enough, a child of two dwarves has a 1 in 4 chance of being normal height.

Huh? Those two statements contradicted themselves.

I assumed the dwarf gene could be recessive (like skipping a generation) like other disease genes.

My grandmother was a member of the Little People of America and when she went to the national meetings, she was in at least one fashion show there. I think she might've won. She was a wonderful seamstress. I believe the fashion show (shows?) she was in was in the 1950s.

Did you not read this: "It is a common mutation."

That means that a normal person can have a mutation in their gamete (sperm-or-egg) causing the gene to mutate from a normal gene to an Achondroplasia gene that will be passed on to the child.

Well it's not a "real" fashion show if people make their own clothes. That makes it more like a pagent.

I'm talking like midget fashion designers (ie Versace mini-me) having eccentric midget fashion shows.

I'm out of this thread. My grandma had to deal with people who treated her like she was a joke, incompetent, unintelligent, or incapable of living a normal life her whole life. Obviously this kind of ignorance and cruelty still exists in our society. It's really funny to make fun of people whose only crime is being born different from you.

Are they born without a sense of humor too?

I am often joked about for my weight (I'm 5 foot eleven, 115lbs), and I couldn't gain weight if you paid me a million bucks, but I don't get all nuts about it. I find it quite funny and I enjoy being slim. Can midgets take a joke?

I would take a light hearted joke over a hate crime any day. Get over it.

There is a difference between a joke (one which is meant to be friendly ribbing), and what dwarfs deal with. It's true that she did not get all nuts about it. As hard as it was to deal with the laughter, pointing, comments, and 'jokes', she felt sorry for people who were so ignorant or shallow or had such low self esteem that they had to make fun of her for her dwarfism. She had to fight to prove herself her whole life, from the time she was 5 and they wouldn't let her start school because they reasoned she was too little for it (and so must not be capable of keeping up with her classmates), to trying to get a job after she graduated from school (few would hire her because they were uncomfortable with being around someone small) to doctors who told her she shouldn't have children because she couldn't take care of them, to coaches at school who wouldn't let her child compete, without even giving him a chance. The entire world is sized for taller people. My grandpa had to build in special things in the kitchen so she could reach things, had to have her car retrofitted so she could see over the steering wheel and push the pedals at the same time.
