Do they make games to hard or do I just suck!?

How many of you actually play a game on hard level?

Most games seem to be consistant with having three difficulty levels regardless of genre: easy, medium, and hard with some having a very easy option. I have noticed for myself that I play almost every game on easy or medium. Easy for a fun relaxing time to just enjoy the game and see its content, and medium for a fun challenge. Some games on medium setting are still really hard. It seems hard level is ussually so freaking hard that it is not fun to play the game becuase I get killed so fast or swarmed by millions of guys before I have a chance to do squat. Quake 3 on hard is impossible, Age of Empires 2 on hard is fun for the first 2 minutes then I get killed by a mass rush from every other computer player at the same time, Jedi Outcast and MOHAA on hard takes just a couple of hits or less and your dead. I could go on and on.

Some games have no difficulty setting like starcraft and others, and they always seem both challenging and fun regardless of how many times I play it. Is it all in the game? Is there a reason some games are made to be insanely impossible to play? What do you think?

it all depends. usually to be adept at "hard" in most games means u need to have mastered a lot of strategy. for instance in AOE2 you need to master different movements and key shortcuts than in quake, which relies a lot more on jump+rocket at enemies. this might sound lame but it takes practice to be really good at some games, not that i am.

I'm terrible at RTS games like Starcraft no matter how easy the opponent is. Other games, like Halflife, I can beat on hard with little difficulty. It just depends on the person.

If the options are easy, med. hard, I always play hard.
If there is a very hard option like in Unreal or serious sam I usuallyl just stick with hard, then I'll replay the game on Very hard, like the Serious option in serious sam.

I'm with you Mellondust, I just don't have the time or patience to master the games to be able to play the Hard level.

I tried Soldier of Fortune on the "Unfair" setting. They weren't lying either. I never made if past the first corner in the subway station! :Q

mellondust - Don't feel bad, I'm pretty lame too. I just play for fun. I don't take it too seriously. Remember, they're "games".

Also depends on how you play. If you quicksave a lot, almost any game is beatable on the harder difficulty settings. If you decide to save only every few minutes, the game will become a lot more difficult.

It'd be nice to have the game automatically adjust the toughness based on how much we suck or rock the gameworld. I generally read reviews before buying games so I know what to expect. E.g. Jedi Outcast was said to be hard so I played at "Padawan" (go ahead, make jokes). :)

if the game is too tough, you can always use god mode to bring the fun out of a game. :)

If I remember correctly JellyBaby, Max Payne adjusted difficulty as you played. If you die a lot, it sends fewer/weaker foes your way till you get rolling again. Then, if you play a 2nd or 3rd time, it keeps getting harder as well....
