When you say "slot fan" do you mean the ones that install in a PCI slot? Yes they work. I have one in my Dell to cool my PCI Voodoo 3000. They are very good PCI/AGP card cooling solutions.

But they aren't a substitute for proper case cooling. You should have a minimum of one exhaust fan, plus the PS's fan to cool your case.
