If the power goes out, obviously my sump pump won't work and that's ok with me, but considering I also have a humidifier putting water into the drain hole and the potential for it to fail or get clogged always exists (in fact, a neighbor's pump just backed into their basement this morning), what I want is something that hangs over the edge of the hole above the water level at which the sump pump kicks in, and then if water gets to a particular level an audbile alarm will go off. Think of it as a smoke alarm but for water height. There's no way something like this could be expensive.

Should be able to rig up something very simple using a float to close a circuit...

I picked this up a couple of years ago:

Watchdog Emergency Sump

Rather than just sounding an alarm, it also engages an emergency pump that runs on a 7 day battery. It saved out basement from flooding 3 times already. HIGHLY recommended.

yeap. if you have a sump pump i recomend everyone get a battery back up.

when i replaced the sump pump in my place 2 years ago we went all out. the backup is as powerfull as most main sump pumps. its a small cast iron one (the plastic ones seem to break down to fast). Its a small 1/2 HP one (it cost like $399)

the main one is 3/4 hp cast iron but a lot bigger.

We also got the alarms just in case. though i have never heard it go off. though i know the battery one has gone off a few times. i will go drain the battery once every few months (disconnect the main pump and fill the hole)

Thing is my pump hardly ever runs. In contrast to neighbors' houses who's pumps run very frequently ours basically never does, so I don't want a battery backup quite yet, but I do need to know if it's failing on me!
