do the washers go on top of or below the mobo?

Am I supposed to put the paper washers underneath the mobo, sitting on the spacers? Or on top of the mobo, between it and the screwheads?

Sorry for the noob question, I am building my first pc

Congrats on the PC.

It goes on top of the mobo. Just put them onto the screw and the screw it in (make sure to screw into the spacers, and have the spacers remain standing). Rubber washers can also be used.

Good luck! If any problems come up, we're all here to help.

I believe the washers are only necessary to prevent your mounting screws from shorting out board circuitry that is near the mounting holes, but nowadays virtually all motherboards don't have circuit components placed that close and even have metallic washers/rings around each mounting hole to prevent your screws from shorting anything out. If this is the case with your board, then you don't have to use the washers.

If you need paper washers anywhere for it to work, you're doing something wrong. Welcome to the Forums and holler if you come up with any other questions. If you don't already have plans for securing your system against Insta-Worm attack, check the Resources page of my no0b computer-builder's guide :) Good luck and enjoy your new rig!

mechBgon, Shooters:

I guess I have been taught wrong. I've always used rubber washers.

I basically concur; I've been saving those stupid little washers that come with mobo "parts bags" for as long as I can remember, haven't really found a use for them.

But I just suddenly thought this - what about the "crush" strain on multilayer boards, from tightening the screws down too tight? I've had occasional problems with this before (on cheap-azz boards), that tightening them down more than just enough to hold them in, causes intermittent faults. Could use of the washers, provide some sort of mechanical stress-relief in this instance? Similar to how some heatsinks screw down onto mobo mounting holes, but still have springs to apply pressure so that the heatsink stays in contact with the CPU?

I've had M/B's that even shorted out on the spacers underneath. I always used those paper washers on top and put electical tape between the M/B and the spacers, just in case.
