$2500 for a rolling right turn at a stop light. I got scammed by the local Popo here in Tennessee and it cost me $50. In Virginia... if the cop wanted to be a real dick.. he could fine you $2400 for this. The law is vague is it is up to the officers discretion. officials confirmed that there are no written guidelines covering offenses that can be treated either as infractions or as reckless driving, leaving police officers free to cite under the reckless statute at their discretion.

They need some Egyptian style protests.

Their excuse is that it prevents people from fighting tickets in court by "encouraging people to plea bargain." Of course then you get the dick judge who just found out his wife gets gangbanged everyday he goes to work... he will dish out $2500 fines to everyone.

Lemme ask you this... Is it against the law to keep rolling in such a situation as you describe?

If "yes", then WTF you whining about? That's not the American way. No, be a man, fess up to your OWN mistakes instead of projecting the blame onto the police who are just doing their jobs.

In my case I was at a 90 degree turn. There was a stop sign there that was put in by a builder for future use. Eventually that turn would be a T intersection. Only about 5 feet of the top of the tee was paved running off into a field.

The city did not maintain that particular street so really it had no jurisdiction to write a ticket. I went to court and intended to plead not quilty but court cases where being scheduled the same time I was going on vacation. Plus it was not worth my time, so I made a donation to the local popo. So yes, dick head, I can whine about it.

Had it been a $2500 fine (which is what the thread is about), that would have been ridiculous. I suggest you read the link and hopefully you can have something to contribute other than dumbfuckedness.

It keeps taxes down.

But still, they shouldn't fine you if you don't hit anyone. Rather, they shouldn't fine you period. If you hit someone, then you should have to pay the victim, not the state.

Virginia has the most oppressive traffic law enforcement of any state I've lived in.

I got a a ticket for going 26 in a 25 in a small town in southern VA because the local cops know that it would cost more in gas to drive back to the courthouse to contest it then it would to just pay it. Also state police routinely give out speeding tickets on the interstate at rush hour for going 5 over - even though the entire flow of traffic is going 5 over. So lame. And yes this is the state where you can get a $2000+ traffic ticket for having a brake light out or for failing to use a turn signal.

Good ole Virginee. Spent my first 18 years growing up there. I see the cops haven't changed much. Where I live now, they call it a California stop. You can get a nice spendy ticket for it, but I think it would be less the $200 bucks and could not be considered reckless driving. Cops specifically are limited in their judgement calls in this state. Be that as it may, the enforcement of speeding here is as bad as I remember it in Virginia, and has only gotten worse since the state budget has gone south. You can get a speeding ticket for going only 3 miles over the speed limit if it's the right time of the month (no quotas my ass).

This is Virginia. If Virginians aren't sucking the tits of the local or state government, they're doing it at the federal level. Everybody's milking the government for all it's worth. They tolerate it because they or someone they know is benefitting somewhere.

If the amount of illegals we have here is any indication, yes, we are lacking in testicular fortitude.

As for traffic stuff, I have to sides to my thoughts.

One is that (at least in my area) the cops rarely if ever do any sort of traffic enforcement and its led to a wide range of really bad habits practiced on a daily basis. The worst is zipping through the intersection after the light has been red for 5 seconds. Thats a great way to open the jaws of death.
Also speeding is getting ridiculous, people routinely drive double the limit, pass school buses when kids are clearly walking around, take the right of way, drive way out into the intersection when the light is not even close to changing, drive without insurance (again the illegals are the worst), promote angry responses by cutting each other off, flipping each other off, blaring the horn for 30 seconds when the other guy is clearly not concerned or gone 20 seconds earlier, etc. etc.
So I really dont give a fuck if another typical spoiled american asshole gets spanked for actually breaking the law AND getting caught (which almost never seems to happen in my area).

On the other hand, it seems like stiff fines dont do a god damn thing to peoples driving habits so obviously the local and state governing bodies are much more concerned with the extra income than making the roads a safe place to drive. In my mind this is wrong and its specifically what the government was set up NOT to do.

I'd rather they impound cars for serious infractions and make people spend the night in jail. That will cure the entitlement mentality real fucking quick. Also, kick the illegals out. And make them not wanna come back by setting up Virginia to be as unfriendly to illegals as humanly possible.

None of those things will ever happen, so I just try to look out and be very careful. Even with full coverage I dont wanna get hit.

Not a surprise at all. They don't want taxes raised, so revenue is raised in other ways, such as fines and fees.

That is freaking ridiculous.

My brother got a $500 ticket for parking in a handicapped spot. Seriously, what laws govern the range of the ticket fine?

Virginia will also take on that surcharge if they catch you speeding more than 20MPH over the posted speed limit. Only thing to say is be very, very careful in VA

I live in Virginia and have for most of my life. Northern Virginia is largely a suburb for D.C. government workers, while the Tidewater area is perhaps the largest military installation in the world and the rest of the state is pretty rural. The result is a conservative state to say the least. You might as well complain that West Virginia is backward.

I thought I had heard on the radio, that the Va. Senate had voted against this today, (google has failed me). Trust me, this law won't be just about people rolling completely though a stop sign, but for people who roll passed the white line and then stop. Now add a camera, and somebodies going to Disneyland.
My neighbor, an elderly lady, got her car stuck in a muddy road shoulder while trying to make a U-turn on a dark country road. A couple of good ol boys stopped and pushed her out, and just as she was about to leave, a cop pulled up, asked what had happened, and then wrote her a ticket for reckless driving. Understand, this is not a traffic offense, but a CRIMINAL OFFENSE, the same as a DUI. It will be on your record permanently! It WILL inhibit your ability to get a contractors license, or a business license. It may make it difficult to get a job, especially with the government, could even get you fired. There are thousands of laws on the books, with more being written daily, that make us all criminals. It's only a matter of time until they come for you. In the meantime,----
HAVE A NICE DAY

Hmmmm. Did the cop read the woman her Miranda rights before questioning her? If not, she might be able to get the charge thrown out.
