older athlons like the tbird? i was thinking about buying a new kt266 whatever (i cant ever remember the numbers) such as the epox 8kha+ and putting a 1.0ghz tbird or duron in it for now and getting an xp later. would that work?

KT266a is the chipset you're looking for, BTW.

Pretty much with BIOS updates, any Athlon motherboard that uses KT133A or later supports all Athlon XP, Athlon and Duron CPU's (including upcoming Throughbred and Appolasa).
