The 75s are horrible, the 60s still seem not great, way above average for dead drives from what I've seen. I'd stay away from IBM, not sure of the higher models yet.

The 60GXP's are just as reliable as any other IDE HDD on the market. If you want cutting edge, go for the 120GXP.

I bought one, its really slow in comparison to my Quantum Fireball AS. I didnt experiance the 75GXP problem and built plenty of rigs with them, but as I saw the threads I went back to Quantum. Now I am not sure what I really want to use now that Quantum is Maxtor.

it's 40 gb per platter so it comes in 40, 80, 120 gb

Well i am sure not trusting any IBM HD. I have never owned one and not going to anytime soon if ever. The latest review on the IBM 120 gxp series at X-bit says that the HD runs at 48 C which is very hot. I am sure you need at least 2 fans to make sure it does not get too hot. I sure would. Plus now you have up to 120 gigs of data to loose on a IBM HD! I can not imagine loosing 120 gigs of important stuff but oh well. I know its not really 120gigs sense when you format it some of that space is taken. But i would go with the WD1200JB which is a 120 gig HD with 8 mb of cache and runs at 22C. Storagereview has a review on it with the temp. and noise at the end! I may be like a degree or few off on what temp. it runs at but 22C i remember. Which is a lot cooler than the IBM 120 gxp series HD. BTW the HD X-bit reviewed was the 80 gig 120 gxp series HD i can not imagine what the 120 gig series temp. is. I bet the same if not more

that's an interesting question, there are a fair number of places on pricewatch that sell it like googlegear.com and harddrive.com
it seems to start at about $96 and go up (without shipping)
the real question is, would anyone buy a new hard drive that was only 40 gb?
music and other stuff that i have on my hds fills them up pretty fast.

I do not like music lol. Seriously. I really never put music on my Hd. I barely can use 5 gigs if not only 15 gigs of my 45 gig maxtor Hd right now. Never filled it up. Never.

It says only 333 hours recommended power-on hours monthly. Thats not a lot at all and who knows if IBM will not RMA there HDs if you ran it over that. Or if you have your computer on all the time. I think thats a pain with only 333 hours but who knows why they did it. Inless they think thats the problem with their HDs. Or want more people to buy there SCSI HDs or something. I should would not go to SCSI just to have a longer power on hour when other ide HDs work just fine with a lot of power hours that is more than 333 hours per a month.

Actually, there IS a GXP120 60GB drive. Googlegear is selling them here and IBM lists them here but IBM doesn't list them in their data sheets. I wonder why?

And just because they use 40GB platters doesn't mean they can't have a 60GB drive. They simply two platters, 2 sides and two arms on one, and one side and one arm on the other. They also have a 20GB model according to that IBM list.
