Do the different brands and models of DSL modems really matter?

i was thinking of getting DSL, and i was wondering if the modem that the isp provides me with is good enough, or if there are better ones available. i don't know crap about broadband access, so please enlighten me. thanks

There are different types of DSL modems/service. The difference is how the modem utilizes the available frequency range, & the standards are not cross compatible. As long as the modem type matches, you should be OK. Typically, though, just use the one your service provider gives you. The modem will be provided by the DSL provider, not the ISP, since the ISP really doesn't care what kind of DSL you have. Typically, though, if you have the option of external or internal DSL "modems," grab the external modem.

woops, i meant the provider. i think the free modem they're going to supply me with is an external modem. the only problem is that i don't have much room for it. i also learned that the external modem is usb. how's that?
