Do the Athlon 64 Retail chips come with some kind of thermal grease?

They come with a crappy thermal pad that will be wasted if you make one small mistake seating the heatsink. Most people use thermal paste bought separately. Generally Arctic Silver 5 is the best.

Yeah, Shin-Etsu thermal pads are utter crap.

I don't consider a Shin Etsu thermal pad as "crappy". Maybe not as good as AS5 but it's not bad either.

As said above the A64's actually do come with a pretty damn good thermal pad.

You should be fine even if mildly overclocking.

Sorry, my mistake. Just meant to say that AS5 is better, and you should have some on hand in case you mess up seating the heatsink and waste your pad.

I'd take Shin-etsu G751 over ASS5 any day :) BTW, the cooler is so easy to mount and such a good application that the issues with sktA stock pads scraping off due to the difficulty in mounting are things of the past.

hah, well that just shows how much of a novice I am. I completely destroyed my pad within seconds. Before I saw the thermal pad I didn't even know any such product was required. Of course, it was my first build.

Nothing to be ashamed of, we all have had our share of SNAFUs :)

Oh man, wouldn't that be nice. If the worst of my snafu's had only cost me $50, I'd be more than happy!
