Do the Athlon 64 Retail Chips come with a retention frame and backplate?

hmm...

the shuttle an50r came with a retention mechanism and backplate...

strange if a board doesn't come with one...

🙂

then again i don't knwo about the other boards 🙂

Older ones did, new ones don't

If you happen to get one that doesn't have one but you need one because your MB doesn't have one either then you can contact AMD customer support for a free one provided you give them your processor's serial number and what not.

What kind of garbage is THAT?!? As if they're not already making bank on the CPUs. AMD continues to astound me.

Supposedly when the A64 initially came out not every MB maker included a retention frame/backplate(not enough time to include the retention fram/backplate in a rush to market?) which was the reason AMD included the retention frame/backplate with their retail CPU's.

Figuring by now most if not all MBs manufactured today come standard with a RF/BP so there's pretty much no reason now(considering cost effectiveness) to provide a RF/BP for every retail A64 package if the majority of them won't be put to use.
