Your best bet is to follow the instructions from Artic Silver that ohnnyj was so kind to link you to.
You seem to be getting conflicting advice so why not use the advice of the guys who make the stuff.
Chances are they know a bunch more about applying TIMM's than I do, that is for sure.
Just carefully follow Artic Silvers excellent and complete instructions.
I do however recommend that you mount the heatsink and then remove it to see if you are getting a good contact patch between the sink and processor.
If it looks good, then you can go through the process again knowing that you have applied the manufacturers recommended procedure for properly applying your TIMM.
