Do the AMD 64's need thermal paste?

Your best bet is to follow the instructions from Artic Silver that ohnnyj was so kind to link you to.

You seem to be getting conflicting advice so why not use the advice of the guys who make the stuff.

Chances are they know a bunch more about applying TIMM's than I do, that is for sure.

Just carefully follow Artic Silvers excellent and complete instructions.

I do however recommend that you mount the heatsink and then remove it to see if you are getting a good contact patch between the sink and processor.

If it looks good, then you can go through the process again knowing that you have applied the manufacturers recommended procedure for properly applying your TIMM.

oops! I bought a heatsink pen when I bought my first Cyrix p200+ and I just color it lightly like a crayon. I never used the stuff on pentiums/486/386s. I am still using that same pen (from Radio Shack) and used it on my Athlon 64 the other day.

I had no idea about the thermal layer on the bottom of the retail AMD heatsink. There was no documentation I could get to so I scraped it off (dumb) and colored it..

The weight of the A64 CPU(Socket754) is what impressed me, not to mention the size of the heatsink. Compared to a p3 cpu it is about twice the weight.

as for artic silver 5, use a little pea sized dot and attatch the hs/f.

for almost any other compound, spread it with a credit card/ruler/straight edge.

just get it over with.
