Do Switches Assign IPs

So i'm sorry if this question seems retarded but i've found that hubs that don't assign ips allow me to bridge my wired and wireless connections through winXP and allow my computers to share internet through one comp but when using a router that assigns ips nothing works but the only problem is the hub i'm using is 6+ yrs old and so it's slow as hell (10-base) so i was wonder if i could upgrade to a newer 10/100 switch as long as they don't assign ips so that way nothing will change... unless someone else has experience linking a wired to a wireless network... so btm line of this message is to get the answer to my title "Do switches assign ips?"

No switches are similiar to Hubs, but better.a Router is what will assign IP's if you set it to use DHCP for your network.

Switches/Hubs won't assign IP's.

Yeah you should be able to swap the old Hub out and replace with the Switch and everything will stay the same.

If you have a router already, you can disable DHCP and use that for it's switch functionality. If you disable the DHCP make sure you write down the router ip and subnet and tape it the bottom. Switches never assign ips by themselves to answer your main question.

So yeah I thought that also but turns out that I bought an airlink router and although i tried to disable the DHCP the damn thing would keep assigning ips to other computers on the network but the computer which i used to log into the router and disable the DHCP server was no longer assigned one but it also was no longer able to see the other computers on the wired network and was getting a "limited or no connectivity available error"
