Lets say something cost $1.69 and CA tax is 8.75%. Then the total is $1.8378.
So do they charge 1.83 or 1.84?

<< they round up. almost every store i know rounds up. >>

Actually, I have seen places where when you buy the same thing sometimes you pay say 1.69 and other times you pay 1.70. The cash registers do something like round up every other n time and down n-1 out of n times so that on average you pay very close to the correct tax.

Hmmm... i'll try this out the next time i'm in my parents store. They've got a couple of cash registers. I'll definitely be surprise if it's random as Mapidus claims.

But personally, i think it's similar to:

Sales tax is actually bracketed, so if the cash registers were smarter, they wouldn't have to round.

Well, I remember it happening to my mom at the supermarket, but personally I have experienced this myself. I eat at Subway quite a bit -- need to keep my body slender, you know. I usually get the Subway club meal and sometimes it rings up as 5.78, but most of the time it rings up as 5.79. I guess you just have to get the same thing a lot to see this phenomena.

Supermarkets dont charge tax (at least not in CA). Food is considered a necessity if it is bought from a super market (versus a restaraunt) and hence it isnt taxed.
