Do step-up rings vary in quality?

I'm thinking of getting a Canon 500D diopter to try out a little macro photography, but it's a 77mm filter and I'd stick it on my Nikon 70-300mm VR, which holds 67mm filters. There are cheaper ones made by Adorama and more expensive B+W ones. Is there any advantage to going with the more expensive "name brand" one?

There are differences in material. Most rings are made from aluminum, which tends to stick a little bit to aluminum filters. Brass rings probably wouldn't stick as bad. This can get a little annoying if you're trying to take an aluminum CPL off of an aluminum ring that it's sticking to. But as far as I know that's the only thing. I use cheapo aluminum rings from eBay and they work fine.
