usually everyone from the same state has the same style/color plates.

i see that in NJ, quite a few people still have the old blue ones. the new ones are yellow.
also in NY, some ppl still have the old white ones with the statue of liberty on it.

do they allow you to use the old ones instead of the new ones if you choose?

I used to live in NJ, and there were people with the old yellow ones (pre-blue). AFAIK as long as u had the same car or transferred the plate to your new car, they didnt send u new plates.

In Delaware, you can even have a third party make "old-fashioned" looking plates for you if you want them. The state-issued plates are gold letters on a blue backgroud, the private plates are white letters on a black background. You can also sell your plate to a third-party, so there's a market for low numbered plates. Four-digit plates are worth $50-100, triple-digit plates are a couple hundred, double-digits are few thousand or so, and some dumbass just paid like $220,000 for a single digit license plate (i think it was plate # 7)

I stand corrected... $250k offer for # 9

ok, so you can basically put just about any background design you like as long as the numbers are correct?

From the NY DMV Website:

If you have Liberty plates on your vehicle after April 1, 2003, you must replace the Liberty plates with Empire State plates. On May 1, 2003, law enforcement officers can issue a ticket to any driver who has not attached the Empire State plates to their vehicle.

As her209 said, in California, we have a number of license plate styles. We also have another situation I think I really cool; if you have a classic car, you can get plates that are consistant with the year of your car. For example, if you have a car from 30's, 40's, or 50's, you can get authentic plates from that era.

In Texas you can run the plate from the year your car was manufactured. They can either be new never issued plates or old used ones as long as you have the complete set and they are in good condition.....you must fax a copy of the plate to Austin for approval. You can also register as an antique as the same time and pay a 5 year registration fee of around $50-75 ( I can't remember). I have a friend in the license plate business and I can get any year I choose quite easily. I have 5 sets of Texas1966 brand new plates in consecutive number order still in the wrapping and they look like they were made yesterday. I also have an original used dealer tag....this is the only way to legally get away with only a back plate since dealer tags back then were singles.

In ohio, you can keep whatever plates you first bought, as long as you transfer the title associated with them over to the car.

Right now, my mom's impala has several generation old plates, they are white with blue letters. The state replaced them with yellow-white faded background plates, then red/white/blue plates.

I'm using the yellow-white ones now. I had them on my olds, now they're on my blazer. As long as they're in good shape, I'll never have to replace them.

Here is a list of the plates offered in Florida. I also read they added a few more. I know a while back, they changed the standard plate and when people had to renew their tags, they just gave them a new one. Otherwise you keep it with any vehicle you get, just switch it over.
